Not sure if I would consider "AJA, BlackMagic, and Promise" to be "industry demand." :) I'll give ya Promise.

I would think having names like Western Digital, Sony, HP, Maxtor, Iomega, and Seagate a lot more proof that TB is being adopted. USB 3.0 has been gaining momentum by leaps and bounds over the past year.

I have a feeling TB is going to be the next Firewire: sure, it works, but USB is so much more dominant at basically the same speeds. But I don't really care at the end of the day...just something much much faster than USB 2.0 for my hundreds of gigs of data that I copy/move around a bit.

And yes, for the true true true speed fans that need the best of the best of the best in their profession...sure, buy what you need.

Matrox has already been highlighted at NAB ~ you missed that. LaCie is an original with "The Little Big Disk" being a small RAID SSD drive with TB expect that mid-summer (salivating over this with aluminum body and very small package).

USB3.0 will have its place for the commoner but with TB that'll be its last generation; I presume.

Question (I'm surprised nobody asked this yet): Does TB bring back MBP Disk Mode? The option to hold "T" on boot up to turn your Mac into a HDD and carbon copy data to external or migrate/image from external to internal?

I also vote for a port replicator type box for MBP/iMac lineup unit.

I'm still on the hunt for a Corei5 Quad-Core iMac (I'm still confused why Apple downgraded from that to dual-core i3's)?!!????

I'd prefer a clean modern OS with usability first and foremost.

Who says they haven't? Maybe the iCal developers are so solidly done that they are dinking around with skins now?

And out of curiousity, what does a "modern OS" look like anyway? Is there some standard or generally accepted look for that? Or perhaps by "modern" you mean "not done before" ? I'm honestly curious about the answer to this.

    Screw the gratuitous eyecandy

Eye candy that gets in the way of functional is stupid. Otherwise, as long as I can modify it, I couldn't care less.

I imagine that this could turn out to be a convenient stepping stone for Apple to delay the release of iPhone 5 until the fall. It'll freshen up the lineup filling in the gap that delaying the next iPhone would have left.

Did ye all not read the report. The whole point is that it is a "Proximity sensor" . That it can detect your gestures while "spaced away" from the ipod. This would be no big deal if it required rubbing your greasy fingers all over the display!! Yes and it states "a touch screen display" "For multifunctional handheld devices".

"The method includes sensing an object spaced away and in close proximity to the electronic device. The method also includes performing an action in the electronic device when an object is sensed." Meaning when I'm close to touching the darn thing do/show this when this is happening on screen.

    Did you read it?
    http://www.macsimumnews.com/index.php/archive/part_1_apple_files_proximity_detector_in_handheld_device_patent_application/

    EDIT: Still not "touchless" either....
"For example, when using a touch sensing device along with a proximity detection system, advanced gestures may be performed that combine proximity gestures along with touch gestures."

I do, and so does anyone who has a classic environment of System 7 and earlier for classic compatibility reasons.

Of course, and I meant that in the 'general sense'. I have long since abandoned the use of Classic on any of my OS X Macs or any of the Macs I support. AppleTalk is so deprecated that I can hardly believe that anyone will be able to use it much longer. In fact, I wouldn't be shocked if it was completely absent from 10.5.

As for the AFP needing AppleTalk, I'm glad you linked the correction. As AppleTalk was an Apple prorietary networking protocol and more and more places were dropping support for AppleTalk routing between subnets/routers (it is PROHIBITIVELY expensive for routers that will pass AT traffic) AFP moved to AFPoverTCP.

I do, and so does anyone who has a classic environment of System 7 and earlier for classic compatibility reasons.

Which makes it even MORE odd that it's enabled by default in MacTels, which don't run Classic.

I've currently got a single 1GB stick in a three year old PB - will that be OK to swap into a new MBP?

    Nope.

I am excited to hear that the CPUs released in January will finally be making it to a Mac in May. I totally understand the delay. It doesn't make much sense to anyone but Intel to release mid range chips months before the high end ones so Apple has little choice but to hold back the iMac lest it hurt sales of Mac Pros and MacBook Pros.

I'm not excited by the idea that the iMacs may continue to ship with 16:9 mirrors. Apple is a premium brand, the least they could do is offer true anti-reflective glass (not the fuzzy matte finish that used to adorn displays).

I'm not sure there's anything we can do about the 16:9 issue. The entire LCD industry seems determined to give us screens optimized for entertainment rather than information gathering or document production. Maybe what we really need is a display that can rotate 90 and still look good. Then I could stick a pair of 9:16's side by side.

not so fast. remember 'origami'. "who?" "what??" yeh, exactly. msoft's tablet PC that generated a lot of buzz before it's launch. and when it launched, it promptly flopped, hence the hollow response when it's name is shouted. i agree that an xbox branded device will have to compete with both psp and ipod, and even nintendo's ds; and hence i don't think apple's in any real danger. nevertheless, it is 'bout that time they release another major ipod revision.

Remember, though - Origami was another one of those projects where Microsoft do the software side and leave a number of third parties to do the hardware.

With this new device, Microsoft will do the whole shebang in the same way as they do the Xbox - so there's certainly danger here; look how the Xbox impacted the console market!

Apple are not resting on their laurels, though - I'm sure we'll see some pretty impressive updates to iPod because of this new competition. :D

I see that name, and I think of Dune, not HHGG. Ix is the planet where all the cool machines & gadgets are made.

Hah, very apt reference, if that's indeed what the ix refers to.

do you need to have a zillion gigabites free to use time machine in a decent way?

for example, if you have a 1 gigabite film, and u delete it 'putting it in the trash, and empty trash', it's still going to be on your hard drive, taking up space, right? and will it also save your cookies, bookmarks, deleted programs,

i rarely delete stuff by accident...so i hope this can be turned off, and won't interrupt much of my normal workflow, the way things are deleted now.

    You can turn Time-Machine off

    Good timing :)

Since my MBP arrived, I've been toying with the idea of moving the Mac Mini downstairs and hooking it up to the TV. Already bought myself a copy of Remote Buddy and a Keyspan Remote control. A bluetooth Mighty Mouse would match up nicely.

I already have a Logitech bluetooth mouse, but it requires a charging station. I'd rather keep the number of cables, docks and misc. paraphernalia down to a minimum in the living room. A basic AA-driven mouse would be great.

Can someone confirm there isn't going to be a to-do list in Lion? This is ridiculous!

So how about a to-do list, hey Apple?

Well. I have to say Bravo! VMWare!!!!
It use SOOOOOOO little amount of memory compare to Parallels (4xxMB vs 2.xxGB), so there is better system performance. I cannot wait to test it on my Macbook but the different on my Mac Pro was HUGE!!

I agree. VMware is already very good for a private beta (don't ask me how I got it ;)). Very fast already, and the app itself starts up about 5x faster than Parallels. And it uses a Cocoa native interface yay!

They show will be on as long as the ratings are up. Maybe Sheen gets killed off when he crashes his car next season and then their long lost brother enters.

Ha.... I mean he does have experience sending cars off a cliff!!!

I love my MM, makes me miss the scroll ball when I use anything else.

If buttons or wheel aren't working right for you, why don't you just take it back and get a replacement under warranty?

Maybe they had to make some stuff thicker to avoid light leaks? I mean we all know that light leaks were the cause of the delay, so it would make sense to make the paint thicker to solve the issue.

Apple doesn't care about case compatibility, as long as their own bumpers fit. If your case doesn't fit, that the case manufacturer's problem, and yours, not Apple's.

If I own a PC and I want to run Vista, why would I want to also run Vista, on the same machine, in a virtual environment?

I do it all the time with XP. For one, it is a simple, clean environment that, if corrupted, can be restored with the copy of a single file. Whenever I do any "questionable" web surfing, not only do I use Firefox, I do it inside a virtual machine so that there is no chance in hell any of my real machine can be touched.

For Mac users, why would we want to install Vista-(via BootCamp) and then also use it under virtualization?

Again I'm doing the same exact thing with XP and my MacBook Pro. Parallels for most situations, BootCamp for when I need bare metal.
